Family Support Specialist

The Family Support Specialist is responsible for providing referral services, which include educating parents in Cumberland County about the child care resources available to them, how to evaluate such resources, and how to handle problems which may arise with child care. In addition, the Family Support Specialist is responsible for providing the CCR&R Subsidy Services.

The Family Support Specialist utilizes the database to assist families in locating child care services to meet their specific needs through information, counseling and referrals. This includes: answering and returning calls for service; assisting parents to assess their child care needs; identifying possible options for families; providing information on quality indicators, regulation requirements, and complaint procedures; refers families to other community resources; and conducts follow-up contacts with parents to measure effectiveness and satisfaction with referral; updates the database to track child care needs.

In coordination with the Family Support Manager, the Family Support Specialist develops and teaches different educational workshops pertaining to parenting issues, and implements the Child Care Resource & Referral program for child care safety seat loan program, i.e., distribution, installation, and proper use. The Family Support Specialist develops articles for the quarterly news­letter.

The Family Support Specialist conducts intakes to determine eligibility of applicants according to policies; schedules appointments; processes subsidy documents; prepares monthly invoices for submission to the Accounting Manager; and enters data into appropriate database. The Family Support Specialist provides information to parents and providers regarding issues related to subsidy, and participates in the Unified Subsidy Project.

Candidate must have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; the ability to make decisions and take action within the boundaries of the position; the ability to carry out functions with minimal supervision; the ability to maintain confidentiality of information in the performance of duties; must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Excel. Candidate must possess strong inter-personal skills that allows for appropriate interaction with personnel in the community and within the agency. In the event the Family Support Specialist possesses bilingual skills (preferred), the incumbent may be required to perform translation services at the direction of the President.

Education Requirements:

A Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or related field. One year of progressively responsible experience in child care management or other work with parents and children; preferably experience in licensure, teaching/training, consul­ta­tion, or similar activity.

OR

An Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education or other related human services field. Two years of progressively responsible experience in child care management or other work with parents and children; preferably experience in licensure, teaching/training, consul­ta­tion, or similar activity. Additional experience may be substituted for post high-school education, provided the requisite skills have been obtained.

Hiring range: $22,550 - $25,369
